What Is an Evidence Package?
An evidence package is a self-contained bundle of case materials that can be shared with co-counsel, expert witnesses, or filed with the court. It includes video files, transcripts, analysis reports, and chain-of-custody documentation in an organized, verifiable format.
Creating an Evidence Package
- Open your case and go to File > Export > Evidence Package.
- Select which items to include: videos, transcripts, reports, timeline, and audit log.
- Choose the package format (see below).
- Set a package passphrase for encryption (recommended for any package leaving your office).
- Click Create Package.
Package Formats
FrameCounsel supports two package formats:
Standard Package (.fcpkg)
A proprietary encrypted container that can be opened by any FrameCounsel installation. Includes:
- All selected evidence files (original quality)
- Transcripts and analysis reports
- Timeline data
- Chain-of-custody audit log
- SHA-256 manifest verifying every file in the package
Universal Package (.zip)
A standard ZIP archive for recipients who do not have FrameCounsel. Includes:
- Evidence files in their original format
- Reports as PDFs
- Transcripts as plain text and PDF
- A manifest.txt file listing all contents with SHA-256 hashes
- A README explaining the package contents
Tip: Use the .fcpkg format when sharing with other FrameCounsel users. It preserves all metadata, analysis results, and timeline data, allowing the recipient to continue working on the case. Use .zip for court filings or expert witnesses who may not have FrameCounsel.
What Is Included
Every evidence package contains:
- Manifest: A signed list of all files with their SHA-256 hashes
- Verification tool: A script that allows the recipient to verify file integrity independently
- Metadata report: File sizes, durations, codecs, and import dates for every evidence item
- Chain of custody: The full audit log for included items
Package Security
Packages are encrypted using AES-256 when a passphrase is set. Share the passphrase through a separate, secure channel — never include it in the same email as the package.
For maximum security, deliver the package on a physical drive (USB or external SSD) and communicate the passphrase in person or by phone.
Sharing Securely
Recommended methods for transmitting evidence packages:
- Physical handoff: Most secure. Copy to an encrypted USB drive and hand it to the recipient.
- Secure file transfer: Use an end-to-end encrypted file sharing service. Avoid standard email attachments for large or sensitive files.
- Court e-filing systems: If the court accepts electronic submissions, use the court's official e-filing portal.
Warning: Standard email is not secure for evidence transmission. Email attachments can be intercepted, and most email providers scan attachments. Always use encrypted transfer methods for sensitive case materials.
