Video Analysis
Master FrameCounsel's frame-by-frame video analysis tools including scene detection, frame extraction, video enhancement, and stabilization.
Video Analysis#
FrameCounsel's video analysis engine is purpose-built for forensic examination of body camera footage, surveillance recordings, and cell phone video. Every tool in this module is designed to surface the details that matter in criminal defense work.
Frame-by-Frame Navigation#
Forensic analysis demands precision. Use the arrow keys to step through video one frame at a time, or hold to advance in 10-frame increments. The current frame number, absolute timestamp, and relative case time are always visible in the player overlay.
Bookmark Key Frames
Press to bookmark any frame during review. Bookmarked frames are automatically included in your timeline and can be referenced in court reports.
Scene Detection#
FrameCounsel's AI-powered scene detection automatically segments long recordings into discrete events. The algorithm identifies:
- Hard cuts from camera activation/deactivation or buffering gaps
- Location changes based on visual environment shifts
- Lighting transitions such as moving from outdoors to a patrol car interior
- Activity changes including sudden motion, use of force events, or crowd dynamics
Each detected scene is tagged with a start and end timestamp, a confidence score, and a suggested label. You can merge, split, or relabel scenes in the Scene Panel.
Frame Extraction#
Export individual frames as high-resolution PNG images for inclusion in motions, exhibits, or expert review. Select a frame and press to save, or use File > Export Frame Range to batch-export a sequence.
Extracted frames retain full EXIF-equivalent metadata including the source file hash, frame number, and extraction timestamp for chain-of-custody documentation.
Video Enhancement#
FrameCounsel includes non-destructive enhancement filters that operate on individual frames or entire clips:
| Enhancement | Purpose | Shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness / Contrast | Recover detail in dark footage | Cmd + L |
| Sharpen | Clarify blurred faces or plates | Cmd + Shift + H |
| De-noise | Reduce compression artifacts | Cmd + Shift + N |
| Color Correction | Normalize white balance shifts | Cmd + Shift + C |
Forensic Integrity
All enhancements are applied as non-destructive layers. The original video data is never modified. Enhancement parameters are logged in the audit trail so opposing counsel can verify that no evidence was altered.
Stabilization#
Body camera footage is notoriously shaky. FrameCounsel's stabilization engine uses optical flow analysis to smooth camera motion while preserving the original frame content. Stabilization is especially useful when preparing video for jury presentation, where shaky footage can be difficult to follow.
Enable stabilization from the Enhance menu or press . The stabilized output is rendered as a separate track alongside the original, so both versions remain available for comparison.
